Glen D. Smith, age 93, of Amelia, passed from this life on August 26, 2016. Preceded in death by his parents, Joe Bob and Agnes Smith, six sisters, and two brothers and the late Bobby Smith one of God’s sweetest Angels with Down Syndrome who shared his home for many years. He is survived by his wife of 70years, Juanita M. Smith, two sisters, Virginia Jones and Louise Poore, many nieces and nephews, and his loyal caregivers. At 17 years old Glen worked at the Norfolk Navy Yard. During WWII he served three years in the Army attached to the Marines 3rd Division which was part of the invasion of Iwo Jima. He received a Bronze Star, Navy Unit Commendation and saw the raising of the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi in Iwo Jima. He is a charter and life member of the VFW and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Glen is a retired dairy farmer. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Tuesday August 30, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery 10300 Pridesville Road in Amelia with military honors. Visiting at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home 16409 Court St. in Amelia Monday 6:00-8:00PM. Contributions may be made to donors favorite charity.
