John T. Winfree, age 94, of Amelia County (Mannboro), passed from this life on June 22, 2017. He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret Winfree, his parents, Thomas Edwin and Sally Quarles Winfree and is survived by his son, Thomas E. (Renee) Winfree, Sr. of Amelia, and his three grandchildren Winn Winfree, Minnie Beaver and Andrew Winfree all of Amelia, and eight great grandchildren and a longtime caregiver Mary Lawrence. He was a retired farmer, former master of Amelia Lodge 101, Army Veteran of WWII and was past commander of VFW Post 8759 of Amelia. John loved to hunt and fish. He loved to hang out with the young folks. John never met a stranger. His first words to anyone he met were " I'm John Winfree. Do you know my son Tommy"? He wanted to live to be 100 years old so he could be on the Smuckers commercial. He lived life to the fullest. Funeral services 1PM on Monday June 26, 2017 at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home 16409 Court St. in Amelia with interment in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends and relatives from 12Noon until the time of service in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Terrapin Neck Grange.
