Joseph Franklin Proffitt

Proffitt, Joseph Franklin, 78, of Jetersville, VA, passed away on February 25, 2018.  Born in Fluvanana County on January 17, 1940.  Joe was raised at the Presbyterian Home and Family Services in Lynchburg, Virginia from age three to age sixteen. He joined the Marine Corps at age 16 and retired twenty years later.  During his first deployment in Okinawa, Japan, he met and later married his wife, Hideko Kinjo. During their nearly 56 years of marriage, they moved many times between Okinawa and bases in the U.S. and started a family with their daughter Debbie. After retirement from the Marines, Joe began his business West Cary Office Machines working side-by-side with his daughter until his second retirement. In retirement, he enjoyed his garden and visiting friends across the country as well as making frequent trips to Atlantic City.  He most especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren watching them play sports, teaching them to fish, playing cards, educating them about gardening and giving them life lessons.  Left to cherish his memory are his wife Hideko, daughter Debbie Harding (Kevin), grandchildren Morgan Harding Gardner (Tom) and Nick Harding.  He is also survived by sisters Minnie White of Jetersville and  Doris Barton of Spotsylvania and brother Robert Proffitt of Wallace, NC. Visitation Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Hillsman-Hix funeral Home in Amelia.  Funeral services 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Hillsman–Hix funeral home with committal and military honors from 2 p.m. at the Veterans Cemetery in Amelia.
