Niles Allan McLoda, age 88, of Midlothian, formerly of Amelia, passed from this life on June 23, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maybelle, and his brothers, Dale and William. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Jane; his daughters, Gail Weatherford (Irl), and Nancy McLoda (Brooks Smith); granddaughters Sarah Weatherford and Allison Weatherford; and siblings, Neal McLoda, Noreen Collins, and Sherill “Cookie” McLoda.
Niles was born and lived in Ohio until he moved to Virginia in 1978 for his job. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1958 and proudly served in the Army, 11th Airborne. He retired after 32 years with the Soil Conservation Service, USDA as the state soil scientist for Virginia. He then started a second ‘career’ working 10 years for the Amelia Wildlife Management Area.
He was a man of many interests and talents. Besides family, his passion was motorcycles, racing them in his younger years and enjoying several cross country trips with his wife in his later years. He enjoyed and excelled at engineering and building things such as wood stoves, utility trailers and even a tractor. Hunting, gardening, square dancing and camping were also interests. He was a community volunteer and leader with many groups over the years including Ruritans, Amelia Fire Company 4 and Mattoax Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home 16409 Court St in Amelia on Thursday, June 28 from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday June 29, at Mattoax Presbyterian Church, 14600 Chula Rd. in Amelia with burial in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
