Walter Moore Obituary


Walter Sims Moore, formerly of Pocahontas, VA and Amelia, VA passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on the morning of March 21, 2018.  He was born on July 15, 1925 in Slab Fork, WV to the late James Garfield Moore and Tessie May Gray. He was the fourth oldest of nine children.
Walter entered the army in 1943 during WWII at the tender age of 18. He served in the European Theatre, 8th Army Division under George S. Patton where he was wounded and received two Purple Hearts. While in Paris, he was trained as a motorcycle MP and became an avid rider. He loved riding and continued to ride until the age of 80. 
Following his military service, he married Eva Devon Brooks, his wife of 71 years. Together they raised three children in Abbs Valley, Va. While raising his family, he worked for U.S. Steel and rose to the level of Assistant Mine Foreman. He retired after 27 years at the age of 49.  Walter was a man of many talents, including carpentry, electrical work, auto repair/painting. He used these gifts throughout his life in the service of his family, friends, and neighbors whenever they were in need. He also was an active member of the American Legion and VFW in Bluefield, VA  where he served as vice commander and commander during his tenure. 
Walter is survived by loving wife, Eva and his two sons, Glen Moore (Janna), Jerry Moore (Barbara), daughter Mary Alice Moore Sanders (Steven); six grandsons, David Moore (Karen), Jeremy Moore, Christopher White (Misti), Eric Moore, Jon Moore, Travis Moore; granddaughter, Meghan Sanders; great grandchildren, Trenton, Jackson, Kaitlyn, Christopher Jr., Bryce, Jessica, Tara and Jimmy. Walter is also survived by one brother Hubert Moore (Hazel) of Abbs Valley, VA and sister Laura Putze of Harrisburg, NC. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Doc Moore, Gertie Birchfield, Easter Cooke, James Moore, Mary Moore, and Joe Moore, and grandson, Jeff. 
Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 26, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Samaritan Catholic Church, 13441 Patrick Henry Highway in Amelia, VA with burial following in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery 10300 Pridesville Road in Amelia with military honors.
