It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ala Irene Shook, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Born on August 30, 1931, in Mars Hill, North Carolina, Ala peacefully departed from this world on June 14, 2024, at a private care residence in Amelia Court House, Virginia.
Ala was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Charles Romas Shook. She was a dedicated mother to her daughters, Lisa Whitus (Ralph), Cheryl Linthicum (John), and Tammie Hoard (Scott). She adored her grandchildren, Gregory Whitus (Lauren), Travis Whitus (Chelsea), Drew Linthicum, Ryan Linthicum (Misty), Joel Linthicum (Jordan), Faith Benbow (Sergei), Wade Handy, Lari Handy, Mandy Hoard, Joshua Hoard (Lizz) and great-grandchildren, Amie Whitus, Kinsleigh Whitus, Wyatt Linthicum, Rhett Linthicum, Ridge Linthicum, Cheyenne Whitus, Sadie Whitus, Landon Hoard, Addison Hoard, and Laila Hoard. She adored her nieces and nephews on the Shelton and Shook side. She shared a special bond with her sisters Lela Davis and Naomi Dickerson.
Throughout her life, Ala found immense joy in her faith, her family, her love for music, and her passion for gardening. Working as a Credit Associate in the retail industry for Sears for 30 years, Ala's work ethic and integrity left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She played piano from age 12 and continued until illness limited her at age 92.
A high school graduate and All-State basketball point guard, Ala's commitment to God and her family has left a lasting legacy. She will be remembered by all for her kind and compassionate spirit.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Ala's life will be held on Friday June 21 at 12 Noon at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. in Amelia, with private interment to follow at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service beginning at 11:00 am. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
