Obituary

Anna Frances Meek passed quietly on February 24, 2014. Born in Burke's Garden, Virginia, September 10, 1925 to John Robert Meek and Anna Davis Meek, she was a graduate of Burke's Garden High School. She furthered her education at McClean Business School in Bluefield, West Virginia. She worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee during World War II, before moving to Richmond, Virginia where she worked at Miller and Rhoads. Miss Meek sought to work for the government overseas and joined the U.S. State Department's secretarial pool that led to a fascinating career with the diplomatic core. Her assignments started in Palermo, Sicily followed by North Africa in Morocco and Algeria  then  London. She worked behind the Iron Curtain for many years, first serving in the former U.S.S.R. for a year, the former Yugoslavia for 4 years, and finally Poland for 8 years as the Ambassador's personal secretary. Interspersed were Washington D.C. assignments at the State Department. She ended her career as the head of all non-U.S. embassy employees in Europe with her base of operations in Vienna, Austria for 8 years finally retiring in 1984. Miss Meek's retirement years were ones of service to numerous people less fortunate than herself. She was a companion to the elderly driver for many years, knitted hats and gloves for those with none, volunteered with the MS Society, amongst other outreaches. She loved to travel with family and friends exploring this country as well as the world and was an avid reader. In particular she loved to influence her nieces and nephews by expanding their horizons in the theater, travel, or sharing a glass of wine as the world's problems were debated and solved. Miss Meek is survived by her sisters Dorothy Meek Eppes of Amelia, Jean Meek Reed (Frank) of West Palm Beach, Florida; brothers John R. Meek (Beulah)of Dillwyn, Jerry W. Meek (Mary Edna) of Richmond and James A. Meek (Pat) of Powhatan; 12 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews, 2 great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Evelyn Meek Jennings and brother William L. Meek. If one chooses to honor Miss Meek, her family would request that one might consider Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, Virginia 24528. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday February 26 at Amelia Presbyterian Cemetery.  The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Dorothy Meek Eppes, 8911 Deekens St. in Amelia.
