HOLMAN, CHARLES ALLEN III (Charlie), age 90, of Amelia, VA died on January 13, 2013 following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Allen Holman, Jr. and Marie Archer Allen Holman, his wife Eleanor St. Claire Holman of Amelia, VA and his grandson Charles Hughes Holman of Knoxville, TN. He is survived by sons Allen S Holman and wife Kitty of Knoxville, TN and William Champe Holman and wife Lisa of Jetersville, VA, daughter Eleanor Woodward Holman of Kingsport, TN, six (6) grandchildren and seven (7) great grandchildren.
Mr. Holman graduated from Amelia High School in 1939 and enrolled in Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). While at VPI, he was drafted into the United States Army as a Technician Sergeant. He served in World War II from 1942 – 1945. His field artillery unit marched into Berlin, Germany at the end of the war. He returned to VPI and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1946.
Mr. Holman returned to Amelia to assist his father with Holman Motor Company and became owner of Holman Motor Company (1956), where he worked until December 22, 2012. Mr. Holman was the first agent of the VA Division of Motor Vehicles (1951) in Amelia. On April 15, 1950, he married Eleanor St. Claire Haley of Culpepper, Virginia.
Mr. Holman was very involved in the community. He was one of the founders of Amelia Academy in 1964 and served as its first President. He served on Amelia County's first zoning committee, was a member of the volunteer fire department, and helped acquire the land where Amelia High School is located. He was also a part owner of Jackson-Holman Construction Company, which built Amelia's first apartment building along with a number of residencies. He also served on the board of Central Fidelity Bank. He was a life long member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Mr. Holman was an avid golfer and competed in many local golf tournaments. He was very fond of Amelia Golf and Country Club and was instrumental in helping the golf club expand and convert from sand to grass greens in 1964. He served on the board for the club and was responsible for the maintenance of the course and greens for many years.
Funeral services will be Saturday 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Amelia, VA with graveside service to follow at Grub Hill Church Cemetery in Amelia. In lieu of flowers, donations to Grub Hill Church Cemetery,12690 N. Lodore Rd., Amelia,VA 23002, are requested.
The family will receive friends at Charlie's home. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home.
