Derwood R. "Doc" Yerkes, 76, of Amelia, passed away on Saturday, November 28th. "Doc" is survived by his four children; David Yerkes of Anderson, SC, Wesley Yerkes of Roanoke, VA, Tammy Trent of Chesterfield, VA, and Mark Yerkes of Moore, SC; eleven grandchildren; his former wife Theresa Yerkes of Woodruff, SC; his two brothers; Ronald Yerkes of Hertford, NC, and James Yerkes of Tuscaloosa, AL; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Originally from Pennsylvania, Mr. Yerkes moved his family to Amelia in July of 1971, where he has resided since. "Doc" was well known in Amelia through his appliance repair business started in 1979, D.R. "Doc" Yerkes & Sons. He was a longtime member of the Amelia Volunteer Fire Department with over 30 years of service between the Mattoax and Jetersville fire houses. He was also a past member of the Jetersville Ruritan Club and Amelia Lions Club. Mr. Yerkes was an avid car enthusiast of all things Mopar. A memorial service will be held at Hillsman-Hix 16409 Court Street in Amelia on Saturday, December 5th at 12 Noon . Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amelia Volunteer Fire Department, the Amelia Rescue Squad, or the Ruritans Club. Condolences at www.hillsmanhix.com
