Ferne Osborne Hutchinson of Amelia, passed away at the age of 93, surrounded by family. Born on March 21, 1933, in Powhatan, Virginia, Ferne married John B. Hutchinson and made her life and home in Amelia. Ferne was known for her hard work, clever wit, and welcoming smile. She was the proprietor of the Winterham Grill and later ran the Rock Shop for many years, where she served the community and formed many lasting friendships with those who came through the door. Ferne and John opened Amelia Family Campground, a place she loved dearly. She was happiest at the front counter, greeting campers, making friends, and helping create lasting memories. The campground became home to the Central Virginia Bluegrass Festival, a beloved event that ran for 40 years and she retired as a school bus driver of 30+ years with ACPS. In recent years, she became a local internet sensation with her weekly "Ferne Fridays," where she shared bits of wisdom along with plenty of laughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Osborne and Dora Osborne; her husband, John B. Hutchinson; her daughter, Brenda Gail Lawson; her son, Kenneth "Skeeter" Hutchinson; and seven siblings. She is survived by her sons, Mark (Carol "Annette") Hutchinson, Gary (Kathy Lee) Hutchinson, and Carroll (Tina) Hutchinson; and by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Hutchinson family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers who attended their mother. You kept her safe, supported, and cared for, and made it possible for her final wish to remain at home. Ferne will be remembered for her kindness, her good humor, her strong work ethic, her love of people, and the joy she brought to so many through the businesses and community she helped build. Her life was one of service, friendship, and family, and her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her.
