Hazel F. "Kitty" Cullins Hazel F. Cullins, age 71, of Amelia Court House, VA departed this life on February 19, 2012, after a brief illness. As she was known by her family and friends, "Kitty" was a wonderful wife, mother, and Nannie to her granddaughter. She is survived by her sister Jody Grady of Amelia VA; three brothers: Warren "Pete" Sexton, of Castlewood, VA; Bob Sexton, of Powhatan VA; Jeffrey "J.R." Sexton, of Blackstone, VA; and her granddaughter Christin Hurd, of Amelia, VA. Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband, William "Pete" Cullins, and her son, Charles "Chuck" Hurd. Hazel was an avid reader and had a great appreciation for poetry. Her interest in poetry began when she was fourteen. It was at that time, while living in the Appalachians, that she lost her mother and left school to care for her younger brothers. She started writing poetry at about that time...putting on paper what she could not say. Her perceptions and empathy with adolescent feelings and challenges are quite evident in her last published book of poetry, "Just For Me." Her poetry in this collection ranges from poignant to off-the-wall, and addresses so many concerns of that age group. Never one to let adversity get in her way, Hazel was strong and supportive of her entire family and all her many friends. While always kind and gentle, she could still deliver strong "advice" when appropriate. One of her favorite quotes was, "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten." The family wishes to thank Shannon Chaney for her caring and kind support while helping Christin care for her "Nannie" during her illness. Honoring her wishes, a simple graveside Service will be held for Hazel on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Mattoax Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choosing.
