Obituary for James E. Davis

Rev. James E. Davis died in Wichita, KS on August 28, 2013. Funeral services will be held by Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home of Amelia at 11:00 am on Saturday August 31, 2013, with burial following in the Amelia Presbyterian Cemetery, Amelia, VA.  The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service.

James is a native of Dinwiddie and Amelia Counties in Virginia. He was a veteran of the 463 rd Army Air Forces Base Unit and served as a diesel mechanic. At the age of 33 James felt the call to enter the ministry and set out to complete his education. He graduated at Oak Hill Baptist Academy, Mouth of Wilson, VA; Bluefield College, Bluefield, VA; Carson Newman College, Jefferson City, TN and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC. He undertook further studies in Pastoral Care and Counseling in the Baptist Hospitals, Knoxville, TN and Winston Salem, NC; and at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, NC. He continued his education with five quarters of Pastoral Care Internships in Central State Hospital located in Milledgeville, GA.

He subsequently served as Clinical Chaplain at Bryce Hospital, Tuscaloosa, AL for 18 ½ years before retiring in 1991.

James was ordained into the Southern Baptist Ministry in 1964 and served churches in Southwest Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama during his career.

James is survived by his wife, Bernice Boyd Davis formerly of Amelia, VA; one son, James E. Davis, Jr. (Beverly) of Montgomery, AL; and one daughter, Cynthia D. Simons of Wichita, KS (Lynn); six grandchildren: James Herrington (Lindsay), Nick Simons (Annie), Christopher Herrington (Megan), Allison Herrington, Jennifer Davis, and Stacy Davis; three great grandchildren: Kenley, William, and Truitt Herrington; three brothers: John B. of Colonial Heights, VA; Billy and Clarence Davis of Richmond, VA; two sisters: Dorothy Coleman and Clara Fleming of Amelia, VA; and many cousins; nieces; nephews; in-laws; spiritual friends; pastors; and counselors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amelia Rescue Squad or the Amelia Baptist Church, Amelia, VA.
