Jane Cornwell Grigg, age 100, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hardy Grigg, who died in 2002 at the age of 86. She is survived by her three sons, Dale (Ruth Ann), Jimmy (Bentley), and Doug; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, with a sixth on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born on August 10, 1926, and raised in Lancaster Courthouse in Virginia's Northern Neck, Jane went on to attend Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. After graduating from college, she settled in Amelia Court House, married Hardy, raised her boys, and taught fourth grade in the Amelia County Public Schools. She loved teaching, loved her students, and they loved her in return. Jane devoted her life to her family-especially her autistic son Doug-to her church, her community, and to graciously helping others. Looking back over her life, our mother once said her greatest "wealth" growing up was having such good parents. They placed a premium on the value of a good education, often saying to her, "We could give you money, but somebody could take that away from you. If we give you a good education, nobody can take that away." At her 100th birthday celebration, she made that point once again, emphasizing the importance of supporting children and always being an encouragement to them. Her devotion to her own family-as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother-and to her students as a teacher embodied these principles. The family, on behalf of our mother, would like to express their sincere gratitude to Doug's Crossroads family for all they have done for him over the years. Special thanks also go to the team at the Watson Memory Care Unit at The Woodland in Farmville for the excellent care they have provided over the past several years. Interment will be private. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11:00a.m. On Saturday September 26 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Amelia Court House.
