John Lynwood Smith, age 89, formerly of Amelia CH, Virginia, died Thursday, June 18th, 2009. He was the son of the late J. Bunyan and Janie Hunt Smith of Halifax County, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Edgar, James, and Lewis and a sister, Elizabeth Williams. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances Anderson Smith, and three daughters, Anne Stupka (Rusty), Rebecca Rose(Leslie), and Kathryn Chadbourne (Alan); and his sister Lucy Nichols (Alfred); six grandchildren: Alexander Stupka (Nicola), Ellen Stupka, Jean Frances Rose, Sarah Rose, Rebecca Rose, and Isabel Rose. He began his banking career with the Bank of Halifax in 1946. He retired as Senior Vice President and Manager of the Amelia Office of Central National Bank (now Wachovia) in 1983. He was a veteran of WWII where he served with Headquarters 10th Air Force with the Air Inspection Office in China, Burma, and India. He always lived a life of gratitude because he was spared by his maker in the sinking of HMS Rhona on October 26, 1943 in the Mediterranean when 1015 of 2000 soldiers were lost. He was a member of Amelia Baptist Church where he served as trustee, Sunday school teacher, and deacon. Also, as a Baptist, he served on the Board of Trustees of Bluefield College. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, CBI Veterans, and the Masonic Lodge. He served as a trusteed of the JL Hamner Public Library from its inception. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 21, at Amelia Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 2-5pm at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home in Amelia, on Saturday June 20th. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation
