John E. Wetsel, 95, of Amelia County died on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living. He was born in Greene County, Virginia, on April 9, 1917. He was one of seven children of John and Lillian Wetsel. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1941 and directly entered the U.S. Army, in which he served as an artillery officer. He was a World War II veteran and retired from the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked for TVA, Southern States and Tyson Foods, and he farmed for decades in Amelia County. He was a past member of the Amelia Lions Club and served on the Amelia County Industrial Development Authority. He was a member of the Amelia Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth T. Wetsel, his sister, Sally Gochenour, his three children, John E. Wetsel, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Winchester, Virginia, Thomas G. Wetsel and his wife, Jane, of Seven Lakes, North Carolina, and Taylora W. Dunford and her husband, Ned, of Midlothian, Virginia; his seven grandchildren, Amanda Wetsel, Whitney, Taylor Dunford, Michael Wetsel, Haley Wetsel, Ann Turner Dunford, and Tarrant Dunford, and his great- grandson, William Pinna. Funeral Services will be held at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home in Amelia at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013, with burial at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia. In lieu of Flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Amelia Baptist Church, 9101 Amelia Street, Amelia, VA 23002.
