Obituary

Did you ever meet the lady that loves eating green bean/onion sandwiches? Her name was Mabel Inez McDaniel, a nonagenarian, born in North Carolina and transplanted to Powhatan, Va. at age 3. Daughter of Dora Wall and John Henry Osborne, she was 1 of 8 children (Sanford, Clyde, Irene, Margaret, Mack, Avalee and Fern). Her childhood years were spent on the family dairy farm, although she was never in charge of milking the cows. Luckily for her family, she did her chores in the kitchen learning the secrets of making great food, and especially wonderful biscuits and rolls. Often imitated, but never matched, her rolls will be missed at the holiday dinners.  She was very close to her family and even close to some of the farm animals. She often told a story about how she wept when her father sold a lamb for slaughter that she had made into a pet. Ironically, the chickens didn't ever pull at her heart strings as she was quite proud of her neck wringing talent. After picking up a sailor from the side of the road in Richmond, Virginia; she left the family farm to start her own family in 1944. Roy L. McDaniel, of Elkins, WV; was the love of her life. Together while living in Norfolk, VA, they had 3 children (Roy Jr., Sandra and Richard). Mabel and Roy became business owners after Roy retired from the Navy. They had a brake mobile and then an auto repair shop that still belongs to the family today. Focused on providing for their family, Roy and Mabel seldomly vacationed but enjoyed the little things in life like good food, country music, card games and spending time with the family. In the '60s, Mabel and her family moved to Virginia Beach, VA where they finished out their years. Open heartedly, the McDaniel home welcomed all family and friends and provided many happy memories for the 3 children, 7 grandchildren (Anthony, Kimberly, Kelly, Amy, Melissa, Joseph and James) and 4 great-grandchildren (Olivia, Madison, Mason and Bentley). Mabel lost Roy to Alzheimer's after more than 50 years of marriage. She has been blessed with overall good health, but had been steadily but slowly declining since losing her other half. The matriarch of the McDaniel family had been losing her independence due to illness at a more rapid pace over the last year. Her daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen McDaniel, has been her personal nurse/caregiver for the last several years likely easing her transition from elderly to ill.  On Monday October 7, 2013 she left this world of illness and pain to join her loved ones in Heaven. How I wish I could witness the loving reuniting of Mabel and Roy after all the years. She is gone but will never be forgotten. How could anyone eat a tomato biscuit or hear a George Strait song without thinking of the good times spent with Inez? Impossible today and forever. Mabel knew what it was to be loved and had one heck of a 90 th Birthday party, thus she clearly won the game.Did you ever meet the lady that loves eating green bean/onion sandwiches?
