Maria Sara Aviles, 88, passed away December 23rd, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia.

Born on November 1, 1937, in San Salvador, El Salvador, Maria Sara was the beloved daughter of Salomon Barakat and Maria Romero, and one of twelve siblings, with five brothers and six sisters. She attended and graduated from La Sagrada Familia earning her high school diploma. She later moved to New York, where she pursued studies in cosmetology and began her career as a cosmetologist. She continued her work in the field while living in both New York and Virginia, touching many lives through her dedication and care. While residing in New York, Maria Sara also took classes in arts and crafts, a passion she enjoyed throughout her life. Maria Sara was a loving mother to her children: Pompeyo A. Barkat, Roxana De Medina, Ivonne Roldan, and Tito Barakat.

On July 2, 1978, Maria Sara married Nicolas Melendez in New York, and together they shared many meaningful years filled with God, love, and family. About 30 years ago, Maria Sara and Nicolas moved to Virginia, where they embarked on several ventures, including opening the beloved bakery La Sabrosita. Maria Sara quickly became known for her exceptional baking, creating some of the finest pastries in the city, including her delicious quesadillas and budin, delights that brought joy to all who visited.

Maria Sara was a devoted Christian who had God first in everything she did and in every conversation she had. She was widely known for sharing testimony of the work of Jesus Christ, touching many lives with her faith, compassion, and guidance. She also found joy in arts and crafts, cooking, baking, and reading - passions that reflected her creativity, warmth, and generosity. Maria Sara was happiest when praising the Lord, and whether through her culinary gifts, her crafts, or her kind words, she brought love, joy, and light to everyone around her.

Maria Sara is survived by her spouse, Nicolas Melendez; her children, Roxana De Medina, Ivonne Roldan, and Tito Barakat; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-granddaughters; her sisters, Marina Barakat de Medina and Haydee Barakat de Ramirez; and many other loving family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Salomon Barakat and Maria Romero Barakat, and her son, Pompeyo Rivera Barakat.

Her unwavering faith and devotion to God were the guiding light of her life, and she will be joyfully remembered in the hearts of all who love her.

Asistió y se graduó de La Sagrada Familia, obteniendo su diploma de secundaria. Más tarde se mudó a Nueva York, donde estudió cosmetología y comenzó su carrera como cosmetóloga. Continuó su trabajo en este campo mientras vivía tanto en Nueva York como en Virginia, tocando muchas vidas con su dedicación y cuidado. El 2 de julio de 1978, Maria Sara se casó con Nicolas Melendez en Nueva York, y juntos compartieron muchos años significativos llenos de Dios, amor y familia. Hace aproximadamente 30 años, Maria Sara y Nicolas se mudaron a Virginia, donde emprendieron varios proyectos, incluyendo la apertura de la querida panadería La Sabrosita. Maria Sara pronto se hizo conocida por su repostería excepcional, creando algunos de los mejores pasteles de la ciudad, incluyendo sus deliciosas quesadillas y boudin, manjares que traían alegría a todos quienes la visitaban.

Maria Sara fue una cristiana devota que tenia a Dios primero en todo lo que hacía y en cada conversación que tenía. Maria Sara deja en vida a su esposo, Nicolas Melendez; a sus hijos, Roxana De Medina, Ivonne Roldan y Tito Barakat; 12 nietos, 19 bisnietos y 2 tataranietas; a sus hermanas, Marina Barakat de Medina y Haydee Barakat de Ramirez; y a muchos otros familiares y amigos que atesorarán su memoria.

La precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Salomon Barakat y Maria Romero Barakat, y su hijo, Pompeyo Rivera Barakat.

Su fe inquebrantable y devoción a Dios fueron la luz guía de su vida, y será recordada con alegría en los corazones de todos los que la aman.
