Obituary

Jennings, Richard Vernon, 94, was welcomed into the arms of the Lord Jesus Christ on February 13, 2025. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Bessie Jennings, his sister, Betty Huffman (Billy) and his niece, Sharon "Sherry" Huffman. Survivors include his children Elizabeth "Beth" Martin (David), Susan Byrum (Steve), and Robert "Bob" Jennings (Sandra). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Maxine Martin McReynolds, Bethany, Nathan, and Heather Byrum, and Michael, Krystal and Sierra Loving, and 6 great-grandchildren. Richard grew up in Richmond, Virginia where he had a loving childhood. He attended John Marshall High School where he joined the track team and played basketball. School vacations were very special for him as he spent time in "the country" visiting family in Gretna. During World War II, the family spent the summers in Wildwood, New Jersey, where his father was stationed in the Navy. Following in his father's footsteps, Richard joined the Navy and served during the Korean war on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. His next duty station was at the Norfolk Naval Base, where he had many exciting experiences as a radioman on the Martin PBM Mariner seaplane. After his Naval career, Richard obtained a degree in accounting from the University of Richmond and worked as a CPA in Richmond. In retirement, Richard moved to be near his daughter in Blacksburg, then to Charlottesville. He loved living in the mountains and taking drives on Skyline Drive. Richard loved the Lord and he loved to travel. He explored the U.S. in his RV camper, enjoying trips to the beach and out west to visit family in Texas and California. His children have fond memories of trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, camping in Florida, and experiencing the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada. He participated in several group tours, learning about different countries and cultures. He always had interesting stories about his childhood, the Navy, UR, his travels and life. Richard loved his family and he will be deeply missed. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 PM Monday, February 24, 2025 at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court Street, Amelia, VA.
