IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William S.
Cassell
August 30, 1925 – November 1, 1946
T/Sgt. William S. (Billy) Cassell, born August 30, 1925, was killed November 1, 1946, while on a Training mission when the B-17 on which he was serving as radio operator , crashed into Mt. Blanc, France. The crash site was not found until August 1947 by mountain climbers. What few Crew remains found at the site were eventually sent to Arlington National Cemetery and buried in a single grave with full military honors. His name, along with the other seven crew members, is engraved on a headstone there. As the years passed and the glacier in which the crash occurred melted, other small remains of the crew have been found. With DNA testing available now, the military has been able to match remains of body parts to family members. Billy's second funeral will be held at Piedmont Baptist Church in Ameia County, and buried alongside his parents, Payton and Estelle Saunders Cassell in Pine Grove Cemetery in Amelia, County at 2PM Sunday October 28, 2012 with full military honors. He is survived by one brother, Frank Cassell, wife Marie of Ashland, Va., two sisters, Mary Lee Cassell Musulin, husband, Steve of Glen Allen, Va., and Hannah Cassell Anderson, husband Franklin of Amelia, Va., two nieces and one nephew, three great nieces and two great nephews and numerous cousins.
