Charles Jackson King, 89, of Parkland, FL formerly of Roanoke and Amelia, VA, passed away at home on August 31, 2023. Born on July 19, 1934, in Cherokee County, Alabama, he is the son of the late L. Dow and Fannie Bell Fuqua King. In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased his beloved wife of 57 years, Mamie S. King; sister, Elizabeth Cribb and two brothers, Troy King and J.W. King.
He is survived by his daughter Donna (Franz) Hofer, and son C.J. King Jr., grandchildren, Christina (Angelo), Jamie (Kevin), Josef (Jess), Haley (Michael), Grayson and Adeline, his great grandson, AJ Medico as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his devoted caregiver, Carina Robertson.
Charles grew up in Alabama and enlisted in the US Navy in 1951. He proudly served his country for 21 years and he was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Cmdr. in 1972. He met his beloved wife, Mamie, in Amelia, VA and after traveling around the world with the Navy, the family retired to Amelia. He and Mamie were active in the community, the school PTA, and loved square dancing, traveling often for those events. He was a member and past Master of Amelia Lodge 10, and a member of the local VFW in Amelia County. As everybody knew, Charlie was an avid reader and loved his book collections.
He started a second career with Newport News Shipbuilding and lived in the Tidewater area until his second retirement. They then lived in Roanoke, VA and ultimately settled in Parkland, FL.
Charles was a loving husband, father, and friend known for his sharp wit and his willingness to give sage advice to those who would listen. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A family graveside interment will be held Monday September 25, 2013 at 1:00pm.
