Obituary of Claire Dimmick Whitaker

Claire Evelyn Dimmick Whitaker, wife of deceased Lieutenant Colonel James E. Whitaker, U.S. Air Force (Retired), died on September 26, 2019, at Johnston-Willis Hospital at the age of 94. Daughter of Frederick L. Dimmick and Alice Snyder Dimmick, late of Savannah, Georgia, she was also pre-deceased by her first son, Corporal James C. Whitaker, USMCR. She is survived by sons Colonel Johnny Whitaker, USAF (Ret.) (Nancy), of Marietta, Georgia; and Lieutenant Colonel Michael F. Whitaker, USAF (Ret.) (Maria); Bruce B. Whitaker; and Chief Master Sergeant David R. Whitaker, USAF (Ret.) (Robin); grandson Luke Whitaker, whom she helped raise; and by goddaughter Bridget McMillion, all of Amelia. She also is survived by grandsons David, Daniel, Nick, and Jonathan and their families; granddaughters Mary Claire and Carrie; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mrs. Whitaker was the former owner and proprietor of Claire’s Department Store in Amelia, a charter member of the Amelia Business Association, member of the Amelia County Planning Commission, the first woman to run for the Amelia County Board of Supervisors, the 2002 Amelia Christmas Mother, and the loving mother of her five sons. Visitation will be at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home on Thursday, October 3 at 6:00-8:00 p.m., with her memorial service on those premises on October 4 at 11:00 a.m. She will be interred at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia following a private service. In lieu of flowers, Claire has requested that donations be made to the Amelia Christmas Parents’ Program, c/o P. O. Box 123, Amelia, VA 23002, or at the offices of the Amelia Bulletin Monitor.
