Daniel Allen Hillsman, Jr., age 78, of Richmond, died at Westminster Canterbury on Friday, May 14, 2021. The son of the late Mary Scott Bruce Hillsman and Daniel Allen Hillsman, Sr., Dan grew up in a pre-Civil War house on a farm in Amelia County that encompassed the Saylor Creek Battlefield. His family ultimately donated 200 acres and a 1740 dwelling (the Hillsman House), to form the Saylor Creek Battlefield Park. He attended Amelia County Public Schools and graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1960. Dan earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Randolph-Macon College in 1964 and a master’s degree in finance in 1976 from the University of Richmond. He joined Virginia Power in 1964 as a clerk in general accounting and retired 34 years later as Vice President of Administration and Assistant Treasurer of Dominion Capital. During his tenure with the company, Dan held various other positions in investment and finance, including assistant corporate secretary for Virginia Power, and director of short-term finance for Dominion Resources. He will be remembered by his family for his appreciation of style and an enjoyment of an event, whether the 400th anniversary of Jamestown or a local opera performance. Dan was a member of Second Presbyterian Church as well as the Commonwealth Club, the Country Club of Virginia, the Jamestowne Society, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is survived by numerous cousins, including Jane Bruce Shell, Nancye Scott Alley, Betty Lou Kidwell, and Bruce Noel to whom Dan entrusted his care. A graveside service will be held at the Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery in Jetersville, Virginia, on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Daniel Allen Hillsman, Jr., Endowment for Health Care Excellence at Westminster-Canterbury, or to a charity of your choice.
