Dennis Leonard Obituary

Dennis Dale Leonard, of Jetersville, Virginia passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022, having reached the age of 75 years old. After years of battling cancer, he died peacefully at home in Jetersville, Virginia with his beloved wife, Sandra, by his side.

Dennis was born on October 14, 1946 in Dayton, Ohio to Ruth Aileen James and Dale Edmund Leonard. His father, Dale, was an apprentice pressman while his mother was a housewife raising Dennis and his brother and sisters - Gloria, Shelly, Gary and Mark. A not well known fact about Dennis is that he was a descendant of the infamous outlaw Jesse James. At the early age of 19, Dennis proudly joined the United States Army where he served overseas in Vietnam. He served in the US military from August 9, 1965 until he was honorably discharged on August 8, 1971. While serving in the military, Dennis was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon completing his service to his country, he attended the Baltimore Engineering Institute at the University of Maryland, as well as the New Jersey School of Photography. Dennis then continued his commitment to public service by working for the United States Postal Service. He moved up through the ranks where he eventually retired as Postmaster. During the early 1990s, he went on a blind date and met the love of his life, Sandra. Dennis was a soft spoken man with a heart full of kindness that won Sandra’s heart. They married on December 4, 1993 and he embraced her family as his own. They began their life together in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania before moving to Sandra’s birthplace of Virginia in 2005. Once in Jetersville, they built a wonderful home affectionately known as “On Golden Pond”.

Dennis is survived by his wife. Sandra; her children Renee Taylor, Renee’s husband, Timothy; Richard Alban, Richard’s wife, Pamela; and his grandchildren - Brandon, Ashley, Jase and Zack. If you asked Dennis what was his greatest accomplishment, it wasn’t his military service or his career, it was being called “Pop-Pop”. Pop Pop loved to be with family. He was also totally devoted to his four pawed friend who was always at his side - Snickerdoodles. Dennis was a strong patriarch to his family and a good friend to all.

The Funeral service will begin on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 12:00 PM at the Hillmans-Hix Funeral Home 16409 Court Street, Amelia, Virginia. At 1:00PM Dennis “Pop-Pop” Leonard will be laid to rest with military honors at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia 10300 Pridesville Road Amelia, VA 23002. In parting, Dennis would want all his family and friends to know that he is at peace and “peachy-keen”.
