Fern Lane Obituary

Lane, Mrs. Fern Southall, age, 89, entered into Heaven on October 16th, 2021. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Lane and parents, Grace Fern Southall and Stephen Osborne Southall. She is survived by her sons Stephen (Judy), Mark, and Tracy (Angela); and six Grandchildren and five Great Grandchildren. Fern was born January 5th, 1932 in Jetersville, Virginia where she grew up on her daddy’s farm. Fern attended primary school in Jetersville and Amelia County High School.  After high school, Fern earned a degree in Nursing from Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, VA.  She was married on July 21, 1951 to Robert F. Lane where they resided in Amelia, Va.   Fern worked as a nurse at Chippenham Hospital when it opened in 1972. She retired from nursing in 1997.  During her stay in Amelia, Fern attended Trinity United Methodist Church where she was a regular attender every Sunday in Sunday School and Service. She loved to cook and seemed to always make something great even when there wasn’t much to start with. Fern also liked to go to Amelia Country Club for a swim at the pool or a round of golf with her golfing buddies. Fern also loved those monthly get togethers with her friends in the Bridge Club. There always seemed to be so much joy in the living room full of people playing a semi-serious game of bridge. Maybe her most favorite activity was going to her sons baseball games in little league, American Legion, and High School as well as their basketball games. Fern was very competitive and never missed a chance to correct a referee or umpire if they missed a call.  Fern and Robert moved to Hanover, Virginia in 1988 where Fern lived out the rest of her years. In Hanover, Fern and Robert attended and joined St. Matthews United Methodist Church where she was an active member and was part of a group of ladies that played the bells for special services. She also loved flower gardening and planted (with Robert’s help) all the landscaping on the property. Most of the shrubs came from cuttings that she had rooted.   Even though her family will miss her dearly, she was a woman of strong Christian faith and firm believer in life after death in Heaven.  Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. in Amelia, with burial to follow at the Southall Family Cemetery on Selma Rd. in Jetersville.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
