Joan Snead Swearengin, age 75, who lived in Amelia County from 1976 to 1992, when she moved to Nottoway County, passed away at home on July 26, 2021. Joan was preceded in death by her father James E. Snead, her mother Etta M. Snead (Wallace), her sister Juanita Davis, her daughter in law Kim Swearengin, and just recently her husband of 56 years, Ray Swearengin.  She is survived by her brother Jimmy Snead, her sister Debbie Lehner, and two sons, Steven Swearengin and Allen Swearengin.

Joan grew up in Chesterfield, in the Pocoshock area. She was an experienced horseman, winning close to 100 ribbons competing in horse shows with her trusty companion, Dusty Roads.  She also dabbled in drag racing with her sister, Debbie Lehner, at Richmond Dragway, winning a first-place trophy in 1976. She was also a lifelong member of the Triple S Horse Club.

Joan went to work for Chesterfield County in 1964, spending several years in the Real Estate Assessment office before joining the Utilities Department in 1969, and staying there until 2001, when she retired after 35 years of service.

An avid hunter, she was a member of Hard Luck Hunt Club for 37 years and served as their support director for 25 of those years. Joan was a devoted fan of NASCAR, attending both Richmond races and the Coca-Cola 600 race for years. A fierce Bill Elliott fan, she seldom missed watching a race.

Joan joined the Amelia Presbyterian Church in 1978 and was a faithful member for over 43 years. She was a huge bingo fan and could be found every Friday night at her favorite table at the VFW.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday July 29, at the Amelia Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  A celebration of life will follow at the VFW in Amelia. Visitation from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. in Amelia. In lieu of flowers, Joan wished for donations to be made to Amelia Presbyterian Church.
