Larry Wayne Duty, age 76, of Amelia, passed away on April 21, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Norma Jean Duty; mother Lillian Estelle Duty; brothers Carl Duty (Brenda), Jerry Duty (Debbie), Roy Duty (Heather), and Jeff Duty (Jenifer); sisters Joyce Goode, Brenda Jones (Deaton), Sherry Rasnake (Wayne), Janet Stowers (Larry), Gloria Vandyke, and Anita Havens (Perry); his god-children Ann Carter Phillips, Jane Lammay, and Joey Mancuso; many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and lots of dear and wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his father James Walter Duty and brother Charles R. “Doc” Duty. Larry graduated from Tazewell High School in 1960, is a 1962 graduate of Ferrum College, and was inducted into the Ferrum Sports Hall of Fame on October 7, 2006. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1965 after playing tackle in 1962 and 1963 for the Spiders football team and serving as assistant coach for the freshman team in 1964. He then played two years of semipro football for the Richmond Roadrunners and the Richmond Mustangs. In addition to teaching at Highland Springs High School, Larry coached football and track from 1965-1970. Larry retired from the USDA Farm Service Agency on January 2, 2007 as county executive director for 34 years in Wythe county and Amelia-Chesterfield-Powhatan counties. The family will receive friends from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 24 at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St. in Amelia. A church service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday April 25 at Hardy Central Baptist Church, 4655 Darbytown Rd. in Richmond, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday April 26 at Grandview Memory Gardens, 38659 Gov. G.C. Peery Hwy in Bluefield, VA, with viewing beginning at 1:00 p.m.
